Governor Roy E. Barnes of Georgia, elected in 1998,
is my third cousin. He is also kin to virtually all the Dunns I am in contact
with, since our common ancestor is James Dunn (1824-1887), my great-great-grandfather,
and all the Dunns I currently correspond with are descended from my great-grandfather,
Rev. John Henry Dunn (1848-1914). Governor Barnes descends from Rev.
Dunn's sister, Mary E. Dunn Duckett.
Governor Barnes is presumably not aware of any of
us. I stumbled on this connection after discovering an article on the Atlanta
Constitution's website dealing with Barnes' genealogy when he was elected.
Oddly enough (or not so oddly as it turned out), I had been searching for
my great-grandfather's siblings when I stumbled on this.
The chart which follows is based on three sources:
1) An article in the Atlanta Constitution genealogical column by
Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr., "People and Chat", "Our New Governor's Genealogical
Background", published in 1999 and downloaded from their website. I do
not have the exact date it appeared in the paper as it is no longer at
their site; 2) the information on the Duckett family in the Pickens
County GA Heritage 1853-1998, pp. 194-195, written by Lenora Duckett
Stancil and Bernard Duckett of Talking Rock, GA; 3), my own researches
in the US census, Gilmer and Pickens Co., GA marriage records, and
elsewhere.
I am a third cousin of Governor Barnes. Other Dunns may compute
their lines from this.
