[28] Estate of Peter Wikle dec'd, 1801, in Rutherford Co., is before family moved to more western areas, and seems to undercut some other traditions. Wife remarried in 1800, so presumed date of death about 1799 or earlier. Tradition that he died while heading west to the Ohio country, killed by Indians with one or two of his sons, while in the Little Tennessee River area, suggests that he had already moved to area where Maria Magdalena and his sons later lived.
[22] Date of birth does not appear in church records, but Orphan's court record cited (making Peter an apprentice locksmith) says Peter turned 18 on April 23, 1762.

Death date is based on the following:
1. Peter entered land 21 November 1798 in Rutherford County (Rutherford Co. Land Entries 1779-1795, No. 1486).
2. A May 7, 1800 entry by John McGaughy cites as bordering land "Wikle's old place". (No. 1829)
3. Maria Magdalena remarried 3 November 1800 to Michael Tanner. (See her citation)
4. On January 14, 1801 a land entry by Lewis Smith (Peter's son in law) refers to "the estate of Peter Wikle decd." as a bordering land. (No. 1968.)
Death certainly had to have occurred between Nov 1798 and Nov 1800, probably before May 1800, and thus "about 1799" seems as good a characterization as any. Several Internet listings use this date but do not cite sources as here.
[27] First references in land records about 1789 in NC. May have lived elsewhere in PA between 1780-1789; some traditions suggest Henry was born Lancaster Co., and no record of his birth and baptism in York Co.
